Joseph Flaxman, Baritone

 

Possessing a "devilish manner and burly baritone" that is "robust and vocally powerful," Joseph Flaxman is a baritone who has been drawing praise from musicians and critics alike internationally and throughout America for his compelling dramatic portrayals.

Originally from Succasunna, New Jersey, Joseph has performed at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, La Palacio del Opera, Lyrique-en-mer, Lorin Maazel's Castleton Festival, Kentucky Opera, Opera Memphis, Des Moines Metro Opera, Sarasota Opera, Bard Summerscape, Opera Saratoga, Opera Naples, and St. Petersburg Opera amoungst others.

 

His 2014-2015 season includes Teddy Forsythe in Daron Hagen's A Woman in Morocco at Kentucky Opera, Bello in La Fanciulla del West at the Munich Philharmonic and Kentucky Opera - a role which he has performed at La Palacio del Opera (Spain) and Lorin Maazel's Castleton Festival, Germont inLa Traviata with Bronx Opera and the role of the Baron with Kentucky Opera, the Father in Hansel and Gretel with OperaOggi, Ezio in Verdi's Attila and the title role of Don Giovanni with the Opera Company of Brooklyn, and the baritone soloist in Brahms' Ein Deutches Requiem with the Riverdale Choral Society.

 

This past year he debuted as the title role in Gianni Schicchi at Raylynmor Opera in Keene, New Hampshire. Additionally, he performed Fiorello in Il Barbiere di Siviglia at Opera Naples, Montano in Verdi's Otello at Lorin Maazel's Castleton Festival, the iconic Verdi baritone roles of Renato in Un ballo in maschera and Don Carlo in Ernani at Symphony Space in New York City, Don Parmenione in the New York premiere of Rossini's L'occasione fa il ladro with the Little Opera Theatre of NY, Mozart's Requiem with the Helena Symphony, concerts with Opera at Florham where he performed scenes as Conte di Luna in Il Trovatore, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, and Escamillo in Carmen, as well as new works with American Opera Projects and the Center for Contemporary Opera.

 

In previous seasons he portrayed Il Monaco Traba in Montemezzi's rarely performed La Nave at Lincoln Center, Montano in Verdi's Otello and Puccini'sMessa di Gloria in France, Guglielmo in Cosi fan tutte at Opera Memphis and Tri-Cities Opera, Wagner in Gounod's Faust at Opera Memphis, Kromov inThe Merry Widow at St. Petersburg Opera, Prince Yamadori in Madama Butterfly at the Ash Lawn Opera Festival, and Betto in Gianni Schicchi with Chelsea Opera.

 

A graduate of the Manhattan School of Muisc, Mr. Flaxman's talents have been recognized by the Liederkranz Foundation, the Hans Gabor Belvedere Competition, Opera Index, the Bel Canto Foundation Scholarship, the Orpheus Competition, Career Bridges, the Competizione dell'Opera, the Armel Opera competition, and the MacGraw Hill Young Artist Showcase on WQXR.
